Brent Amaker - A Very Brent Amaker Christmas
11 playsDownload

I’m not a fan of “traditional” Christmas albums. Every year, I look for the one Christmas outlier that echoes the same sentiment, but without all the “ho-ho-ho and mistletoe and presents to pretty girls”. Be it Mark Mothersbaugh’s “Joyeaux Mutato”, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks’ “Crazy For Christmas”, or Bob Dylan’s “Christmas In The Heart”, chances are it will remain in my permanent Christmas music rotation.

This year, my Christmas outlier comes not in the form of an album, but a single song: Brent Amaker’s (of Brent Amaker & The Rodeo) “A Very Brent Amaker Christmas”. Somehow, Amaker manages to steer (no pun intended) away from his usual themes of whiskey, women, and weapons. Instead he focuses on giving the gift of love and hugs in a song that mixes Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three’s “Boom-chicka-boom”, the bleeping synths of Kraftwerk, and the vocoder stylings of Bruce Haack.

To paraphrase a popular Christmas special: of all the Brent Amaker Christmas songs out there, this is the Brent Amaker-est.

Class Actress - Silent Night

Halloween just passed and Thanksgiving’s right around the corner. So, is it too early for Christmas music? Washington DC-based Carpark Records doesn’t seem to think so. Here’s the first offering from a free Christmas EP coming soon to retailers from Brooklyn’s Class Actress. As Carpark promises, it will be a physical release only and once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Also, this Honda ad features an ace Class Actress tune from their Journal of Ardency EP.
