Up-and-coming Brooklyn fuzz-rockers The Men are set to release their new album, Open Your Heart, via Sacred Bones Records on March 6th. Two days later, they’ll play an early show at Strange Matter in Richmond. Here’s a taste of what you might hear; it’s the title track from the new album, courtesy of NPR.
Listening to this cut, it’s hard not to hear the influence of the 1-2-uppercut of Hot Snakes’ Automatic Midnight with its hard-hitting mix of punk rock and surf guitar riffs. Between this and the new Cloud Nothings album, is it too soon to call 2012 “The Year of the Guitar”?

On this, the same day that Jarvis Cocker, Erol Alkan, and Boyz Noize unleash a Leonard Cohen cover/dance remix, Jesse Lortz takes us back to the cabin in the woods with his video for the track, “Daggers” from The World Is Just A Shape To Fill The Night. Jesse and his group of female background singers easily bring back memories of the first time I heard Songs of Leonard Cohen, especially “So Long, Marianne”.
While it’s safe to say The Dutchess and The Duke are no more, it seems as though Jesse’s not quite ready to shake the California folk sound they so easily made their own. This won’t fit the bill for the summer jam I’m still seeking, but you can bet I’ll be playing this one very often when it arrives on August 16.
Hear more of the album at MTV Hive, or download two tracks at Stereogum and My Old Kentucky Blog.
I get a very “Songs by Leonard Cohen” feel from this track by Case Studies. Case Studies is the new project of Jesse Lortz, formerly of Dutchess & the Duke, who put out two albums of lo-fi folk deeply rooted in the folk-rock sound of The Mamas and the Papas and the Stone Poneys. After the release of “Sunset/Sunrise”, Dutchess & the Duke split up, leaving Lortz to his own devices. In this case, it was secluding himself in a cabin to record an album of new material with Keegan Cooke of Brooklyn noise-pop band Crystal Stilts and a few other friends.
Case Studies’ debut album, The World Is Just A Shape To Fill The Night, will be out August 16 on Sacred Bones Records.
